Sharing Your Fears

Why is it that we shy away from sharing our fears with others? Oh, okay, I get it, I’m supposed to be the only one who does it, right? Well, for the sake of our discussion today, we’ll go with that and you can decide what to think about it later, LOL.

I watched a movie recently and one of the main characters revealed to the other main-ie (yes, I just made that a word) that she was afraid of mayonnaise, then proceeded to share what her other top fears were. I sat there thinking to myself, “girl, you just met this dude in the airport, now you’re having dinner with him and sharing your worst fears? What if he’s a kidnapper (or adult-napper), takes you away, and uses your now-revealed fears to keep you hostage?” Yes, I seriously thought that, LOL.

I think one of the reasons we tend to lean to the left (not sharing our fears, that is) is because once we do, we’ve now become vulnerable. Not so much to the other person, but to ourselves. Hear me out on this one, ok, because it makes a ton of sense. It’s much easier to be bold when no one knows our fears besides us, but once shared, it’s no longer a fear that’s been revealed, but also a weakness. Have you ever hesitated when completing a job application when it came to the question of ‘what is a weakness you possess?’ No one really wants to put down anything, but we all have at least one, if not many. I submit to you this is one of the many reasons to get to know Jesus and hang on tight.

The Word of God offers us so many passages of scripture that speak to fears and weaknesses. Set aside some time today to read these and search for others that coincide with whatever your fears may be today or wherever you are weak in spirit. God is always a very present help in the time of need. You may feel alone and, in the natural, it can certainly be true, but in the spirit, the Lord is always there. Allow yourself to feel his presence in your life and choose today to not shy away from revealing your fears.
