Don’t Just Walk Around Singin’

Some time ago, my daughter was playing this song and I thought it was, by far, one of the prettiest worship songs I’d heard in quite some time. The lyrics, “I hear you call, I am available. I say ‘yes, Lord,’ I am available’ resonated with my spirit.

Throughout my lifetime, as least as far as I can remember, I’ve always analyzed songs. Yeah, sure, it got on some people’s nerves, but you truly do yourself a disservice if you just walk around signing something, not taking into account what you’re saying and why. We speak life into the things we say, so it can be a dangerous game we play as we begin to make promises that we don’t aim to keep. The Word of God is always trying to set us up for success, telling us to “be swift to hear [and] slow to speak.” I submit to you that it means slow to sing those words as well.

If you tell the Lord you’re available, it can’t be on your terms. It’s not the same as making plans to pick someone’s kid up from school because you can flex your schedule and still get there on time. We don’t know when, where, or how God wants to use us, so being available to him means to literally respond to situations so that God may be glorified (1 Peter 4:11). If you don’t think that’s a reason to be cautious about what you say or sing, I’m here to tell you, my friend, you’re in for a rude awakening.

In all honesty, it should be a reason for you to become more excited about what you take in. For the most part, you’re in control of what you say or sing, so listen to what’s going to uplift your spirits, just be mindful of your ‘yes’ and ‘no’ while you’re doing it.
