The One Aiming to Change

Which do you believe is true: (1) Everyone can change or (2) People don’t change? Would you believe me if I told you, that in all actuality, both statements ring with mounds of truth? Of course they do. Everyone can change because it’s a choice. The reason some people don’t change is because they make a choice to not do so. Now, let’s not stray too far from the baseline. I’m not saying that a person who’s been diagnosed with dementia can just opt to present that way one day and not the next. For this food-for-thought moment, let’s aim to focus on the average Joe Blow, agreed?

Regardless if you’re an avid believer in Jesus Christ or if you just wanna’ exist in the world as though we came from a big bang, changing who we are (how we behave, where we go, etc.) results from the desire to do so. We have to make up in our minds that we are going to do or be something different than what we are right now.

Consider the bad guy in any movie? How often has one tried to change, then when faced with challenges by people who refuse to accept this possibility, they revert back to their old, bad-guy behavior? Did they not change because they couldn’t or because they decided not to since no one else seemed to believe they would change anyway? The latter is usually what wins in the end. It doesn’t have to, though, because the only person who needs to believe they can change is the one aiming to change.

The Word of God tells us that in order to be changed, we must begin with the renewal of our minds (Romans 12:12). It is here where we imagine the long-term affects of our decision-making and it is here where we must accept that change will eventually become reality. I’ve heard it said that no one changes overnight. While that may be true in its own right, we must be determined to put into practice, night after night, thoughts and behaviors of change. The more we do, we will see it come to fruition day after day.

If you’ve been considering a change, make up your mind to accept that not everyone will be on the belief train with you. There are just some rides you’re going to have to take alone. I can assure you, though, that, given half the chance, Jesus will meet you right where you are and get on board with you. You will no doubt experience pitfalls and that’s to be expected. When you do, remind yourself that 1 John 1:9 was written with you in mind.
