Changing Your Past Would Change Everything

It’s so hard to find anything wholesome to watch on television these days. Almost every good script comes with a ton of inappropriate scenes placed just-so in every episode. Yet, I’ve found one that is subtle and not vulgar in it’s attempt to make me support every sin known to man. If you’re still wondering what show has my attention these days, you guessed it correctly. It’s “The Flash.”

If you haven’t seen it, here’s my two-cent recommendation: it’s good. I haven’t had to skip scene portions and I can watch it with my children; granted, my oldest gave up on it a while ago, LOL, and my youngest just isn’t interested. For as much as I enjoy Barry (main character/protagonist) saving each day ‘in a flash,’ he has this one particular weakness that really melts my butter (makes me frustrated).

You see, Barry can run so fast, at times, that he can actually run back to his past life. He’s done the past/future flashes unintentionally and, during those times, I totally felt bad for him because he ended up either reliving some horrific moments or, in the future, witnessing some horrific things to come. So, no, he gets no complaints from me there. It’s when he deliberately goes back in time to change his past and he does just that – he changes his past and everyone’s around him.

So, here’s your twenty-second thought for today – if you could change the past, would you? You can come up with as many loopholes as you’d like, but I’ve resolved myself for the answer to be ‘no.’ Any scenario I’ve ever come up with leads me back to the passage of scripture that tells us how no man knows when Jesus will return (Matthew 24:42). I’m not so caught up in my past failures or losses or areas I’ve overlooked that I would spend my time running back and forth changing them. I’m who I am today because of every stupid, wise, quick, thoughtful, rude, kind, selfish, and loving act I’ve ever made. My past made me who I am today and, while I don’t like all of the areas involved, I love myself, right now, just the way I am. I wake up every morning and thank God for having kept me safe all night and for giving me another day to make a positive difference in the world. I don’t take for granted that I could’ve died in my sleep, but God saw fit to grant me grace.

If you’re burdened over where you are in life today, I pray you remember that sentiment. God is the author of life and death, no matter how many movies or television shows want you to believe otherwise. You are alive today because you matter to God. When you repent of your sins, God forgives your past, and you never need to contemplate taking time to go back and change anything. Focus on the ‘here and now’ because the ‘then and there’ are over. Make today a part of your past you wouldn’t change – even if you could.
