- My feelings were so hurt (over something)
- They’re all just hypocrites
- I don’t see where anything’s changed (in my life)
- Most people in church are just judgmental
- I don’t have enough time
- Where in the Bible does it say you have to go to church?
- I’m too tired
- I’ve gotta’ take care of (somebody, my kids, my dog, etc.)
- I woke up with a headache
- Their services are too long
- If they served breakfast, I’d go
- I don’t have a ride
- I don’t have any church clothes
- People try to hug you and I don’t like that
- I forgot what time service starts
- I can get the same thing at home watching a sermon on tv
- I get tired of hearing about them needing money
- They don’t offer Children’s Ministry
- I don’t know what my calling is
- They preach the same thing over and over
Now, that’s just 20 reasons that people use to avoid going to a church building. I’m sure you could add to the list if you gave it a try. I’ll admit, I’ve said a few of those a time or two, until I accepted the one reason to attend that crushed them all for me: I chose to attend church (the building) because Jesus died on the cross for my sins.
1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” So, when I attend church, I do it to the glory of God. When I serve in a ministry, I do it to the glory of God. When I agree to disagree with a person at church or a decision to made, I do it to the glory of God. Now, my reason may not be what gets you up in the morning and headed out to church and that’s ok. While we are all made in God’s image, we have different thoughts and ideas about why we will or won’t do a certain thing. I encourage you on today, though, to find that reason that’ll make you wanna’ dart the doors of a church. And if you’re still set on not “attending” one, remember, the church resides in you, so ‘be’ the church wherever you go (Ephesians 4:32).
