Somebody’s Watching You

I have a combination of at least 20 shirts (sweatshirts, short-, and long-sleeved) that I wear during church ministry. For some reason, I’m more cognizant of my behavior when I have those shirts on. I can recall several times where I’ve endured someone almost running me over in the parking lot of Walmart because I had one of my shirts on. Or a time when I’ve had horrible service in a restaurant, yet I found myself dealing with it in a calm manner (at least calmer than I might’ve done if I’d had on a different shirt LOL). Even in my car, I’ve responded differently to being cut off in traffic or driving behind, what seems like, the slowest person ever to receive a driver’s license. While most people can’t tell what’s on my clothing, I’m aware that I represent my church by what I’m wearing. Yes, many o’days, those shirts have kept me from ‘losing my religion.’ In reality, they’ve kept me from embarrassing myself and my church, while putting God second without fully acknowledging it.

The thought you may be having is ‘why?’ Don’t fret, my friend, you and I are in 100% agreement – it shouldn’t matter what I’m wearing, especially if my concern is first and foremost about the way I’m representing the Kingdom.

Throughout the Bible, there are many passages of scripture that speak to how we ought to behave as followers of Christ. I have yet to find one that says, ‘if you have on attire that represents (your church, your child’s school or team, your favorite sports team, etc.), then be on your best Christian behavior.’ If you happen to come across one, do tell, and share it with the world.

In the beginning of the Book of Titus in the bible, Chapter 2, it reads, “But as for you, promote the kind of living that reflects right teaching.” I encourage you to set aside some time to read the entire chapter. Mind you, verses 9 and 10 may give you pause, but keep in mind that the words in those verses did not uphold the sin of slavery. That’s another post for another day. Don’t allow the enemy to cause you to miss out on what God has for you as it relates to the topic at hand. Everything in due season.

So, in closing, it’s safe to say it’s not about what you wear, but how you behave in anything you have on. No matter where you are or what you’re doing, someone is always watching you. My mother used to always say, ‘what you do in the dark will come to light.’ I’m not sure if she knew just how biblical that saying was, but I’m sure glad she impressed it upon us just the same. I pray it causes you to consider your daily attire, wherein you and I, as followers of Christ, should behave accordingly, knowing we’re to wear the same thing everyday – the whole armor of Christ.
