I read a devotional the other day that referenced Ecclesiastes 11:3 and I’d set my mind to write about it. We’ll get to it, but as I began to read the verses surrounding it, I felt led to focus more on those than it. One of the verses, in particular, is Ecclesiastes 11:4. It says that, “if you wait for perfect conditions, you will never get anything done” (New Living Translation {NLT}, 1996).
To give you just a little background on the passage, this verse is from King Solomon, one of the most renowned king’s in the Bible, who was also the son of King David, whom the Bible tells us was “a man after God’s own heart” (1 Samuel 13:14 and Acts 13:22). Solomon believed in action. He believed in avoiding procrastination. And he believed that those things should be done while continually seeking the guidance and will of the Lord.
So, why do we ponder over it today? I ask you, is there anything you’ve been given to do that you have yet to start? Have you stepped out on a commitment only to pause after the first few steps? What’s keeping you from doing what you started or should be doing? Moreover, who’s keeping you from doing it? We all have dreams, goals, and God-given direction as to how we should be managing our lives. Whether or not we do it is up to us. Sure, some people will tell you ‘no/don’t try that now/it’s not going to work/you don’t have the background for that, etc.,’ but when’s the last time you sought the answer from the Lord? When’s the last time you picked up the Bible and asked God to show you, through the scriptures, what’s the next step you should take? When’s the last time you’ve asked for forgiveness because of how long you’ve procrastinated, knowing He’s given you instructions on the next step already?
Now, to Ecclesiastes 11:3b. The NLT version reads, “when a tree falls, whether south or north, there it lies.” In layman’s terms, wherever that tree has fallen will most likely be where it will stay because it can do nothing to help itself. Thank God, in this instance, we are not at all like trees!!! We have the ability to get up each and every day and do something with our lives. In some shape, form, or fashion, we can make a difference. We can be obedient to the calling on our lives, one day, one hour, at a time. So on today, face your yourself and figure out what you’re waitin’ on to get moving.
The only day we will never be able to do anything is on the day when these earthly bodies die. I’d rather face God with a million failures and few successes, knowing that I didn’t avoid trying because of the risks involved, but stepped out on faith because of the earthly and heavenly gifts that lie ahead. I pray that on today, you be encouraged to do the same.
